Background of the Study
Economic activities, including industrial expansion and urban development, have increasingly led to the destruction of cultural heritage sites. In Ibadan North, rapid commercialization has threatened historical landmarks, traditional structures, and archaeological sites (Adebayo, 2023). This study examines how economic pursuits, while fostering growth, inadvertently contribute to cultural erosion. The conflict between economic development and heritage conservation is at the forefront of regional debates. Local communities, whose identities are closely tied to their cultural heritage, face the loss of irreplaceable historical narratives and artifacts. The study critically reviews case studies, policy shortcomings, and field evidence to evaluate the scale and impact of economic activities on cultural heritage. By integrating economic analysis with heritage studies, the research aims to propose balanced approaches that support development while safeguarding cultural assets (Folorunsho, 2024). This interdisciplinary investigation is essential for developing sustainable policies that reconcile growth with the preservation of historical identity (Olatunde, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
There is mounting evidence that economic activities in Ibadan North are accelerating the destruction of cultural heritage. The drive for commercial expansion often overrides conservation efforts, leading to irreversible damage to historical sites. The lack of effective regulatory mechanisms further complicates preservation efforts (Adekunle, 2023). This study seeks to quantify these impacts and propose remedial measures.
